Florian, D. (2000). A pig is big. New York, NY: Greenwillow Books.

A Pig is Big is a wonderful concept picture book that includes a comparison of sizes between objects. The author begins the story by introducing a big pink pig as he travels around town, across a continent, and even universe taking a look at things that are big. Eventually, he comes to the conclusion that the universe is in fact the biggest. This book is recommended for beginning young readers anywhere from pre-kindergarten to elementary as it I structured to help children understand the basics of how big things are. Florian’s book explores the themes of shapes and sizes as it focuses on the mass of different objects. I could incorporate this book into my classroom by reading the book aloud to my students and then having them compare each object to one another. I could also have each student choose an object in the classroom and have them compare it to their peers.
