Cricket,in my view, is the perfect team game. The pace of its flagship format, the Test match lends itself to writing and contemplation.

The game lends itself to the accumulation of arcane statistics and in so doing keeps the memory of its past very much alive.

While we see incredible feats from today's players, they can never be Bradman,Verity,Hobbs. Yesterday's giants throw long shadows.

JM Kilburn witnessed them play but regretted not seeing Fry, Grace et al.

The spirit of cricket embodies all that should be right even when the reality does not live up to those ideals.

The game lends itself to the accumulation of arcane statistics and in so doing keeps the memory of its past very much alive.

Sweet Summers encapsulates it all with the added bonus it looks back on a golden age as we currently see it.

The first significant section deals with heroes of the game which is very much dominated by Yorkshire cricket. Names to conjure with but in truth few will be alive today that actually saw many of them play and the writing does not evoke any wider sense of the game. These thumbnail sketches of characters failed to engage me for the most part.

Chapter three is an interesting essay on the different moral codes which can arise, almost out of necessity when professionalism arises. Part lament part acceptance of reality reading it today I more keenly felt the debate that still continues (thankfully) about upholding the correct values of the game we love and how important it is to fight against the erosion of those values.

The slightly one eyed view of limited over cricket now seems dated in its assessment that it will destroy the higher standards of the game. This leaves quite a bit of the book sounding like a lament from the out of touch and backward looking element.

I much prefer the Test but it would be a much duller, and inaccessible, affair without limited over innovation and modern media.

Ultimately, for me, the book failed to evoke the greats of yesteryear with enough clarity and was proven more wrong than right in its doom mongering.
