I really liked this book and I wish I could read French as the only people that reviewed it so far did so in French.I would love to know what others thought.

On my English translation, Tremblay is compared to Hitchcock, Polanski and King, but I would like to add Poe to that list. The narrator, Edgar, sounded and acted very much like the narrator in "A Tell-Tale Heart" as his obsession with Jean drove him to madness and murder.

While the story was riveting, I wasn't really sure if Tremblay was trying to make a point and if so, which one.Are we supposed to feel that Edgar's madness was a result of his upbringing (a violent father who died on Edgar's actual birth day and a repressive mother)? How are we supposed to feel about "Jean" and whether his war experiences were a cause of his actions? What are we to make of Emilie and her violent band and bandmates? And how are we supposed to feel about an obsession with a Christ figure?
