A summary of LB's various writings, this book represents a distillation of his thoughts on the supernatural.

This book informs my thinking on the difference between (more rigidly) logical and (more fluidly) associational modes of mental processing. It's a clearer work thanHow Natives Think; that book only became lucid, for me, in its final pages, when it focused on the differences between what LB presumed was the dominant form of thinking in Western societies (a nice wish, this), logical processing with crisp, bivalent, conceptual edges and hence a powerful regulative role for non-contradiction, and the other form of thinking he associated with "primitive thinking" (what, precisely, this other form is remains somewhat unclear to me in this earlier work). It encompasses elements of his Primitive Mentality and The "Soul" of the Primitive, but in my view expresses LB's central ideas more clearly than these works.

If you have an interest in understanding thought and feeling through a conceptual grid based on essences, if you are interested in cognitive and/or affective essentialism - as with, say, Hood's Supersense - then I recommend this work to you.
