“There is a zenith in all things: in architecture the Taj Mahal, in Gems the Koh-I-Noor, and in philately the Post Office Mauritius Stamps.”

The Post Office Mauritius Stamps are among the most valuable in the world, and their story is well known. The story of the man who printed them, and whose mistake made them so rare, is less well documented.

Joseph Barnard was born to a Jewish merchant family in Portsmouth in 1816, just as the island of Mauritius was coming to terms with the imposition of British rule following its conquest during the Napoleonic wars. In 1838 the young Joseph stowed away on a ship bound for Australia, possibly running headlong from his debtors, but was thrown off en-route at Mauritius.

With no money or contacts, he used his natural charm and abilities, together with a dose of good old-fashioned lying, to gain himself a position in the colony and a wife with whom he would have at least fourteen children. In 1847 he would be responsible for the production of one of the most renowned and valuable stamps of all time, and become famous for a mistake.

During his life he found himself at times an engraver, a printer, a businessman, and eventually the pinnacle of colonial culture, a plantation owner, before losing it all again. At the same time the island itself was going through formative changes of its own, with Indian immigrants, ex-slaves, British arrivals and the French planter class all trying to find their own place in society following the abolition of slavery.

This book attempts to piece together an account of his life, and the times he lived in, from the few sources we have.
