Locke's Enlightenment (Robert Theis) pdf, epub, doc

John Locke's philosophy, whether the empiricism of the Essay Concerning Human Understanding or the liberalism of the Two Treatises of Government, dominated thought in the eighteenth century not only in the English-speaking world but throughout much of Europe. The series of connected essays by G.A.J. Rogers, all but one written during the 1990s, which are brought together here shed important new light on the origins of Locke's philosophy, its relationship to his biography and to his contemporaries, and aspects of its influence. The chapters illuminate the origins of his work , the interconnections between Locke's epistomological, political and religious thought, the nature of his debt and responses to Descartes and to Hobbes, the relationship between his thought and contemporary sceptical concerns, and the overlap and probable influence of his philosophy on Isaac Newton. It also examines aspects of the relationship of Locke's ideas to those of the Cambridge Platonists, Edward Stillingfleet and contemporary religious issues. The final chapter emphasizes the unity of late seventeenth -century English thought, arguing against the too common assumption that religion, science and philosophy became dissociated from each other in the early Enlightenment.
