Toast (Richard Bean) pdf, epub, doc

One eventful Sunday night at a Hull bread plant in 1975 comprises the setting of Richard Bean's exploration of personal dynamics, class & workplace politics. When a big order from Bradford comesin too much yeast, a chicken kiev & a lid threatens to stop production and the balance of life as the men know it. Working relationships take centre stage; wives are referred to as 'your lass' and childen are mentioned but the men's lives and social support network (tenuous as it is) revolves around making bread. The only jarring note in the play is Lance, the 'student', who is clearly mentally unwell; his declarations of impending death echo classical tragedies but feel out of place in this drama.
