Twilight of the Idols (Aleš Debeljak) pdf, epub, doc

I think it's beautifully written. Essayist sorrow for ex Yugoslavia, but not in any way in the terms of socialism, political structure and religion, as Mr. Debeljak writes about one big country which doesn't exist anymore, and now consists of Bosnia and Herzegovina (capital: Sarajevo), Croatia (capital: Zagreb), Macedonia (capital: Skopje), Montenegro (capital: Podgorica), Slovenia (capital: Ljubljana), Serbia (capital: Belgrade) with autonomous province of Vojvodina (capital: Novi Sad) and Kosovo (capital: Priština).

He writes about how Yugoslavia was mix of cultures, music, food and mentalities, literature and influences. He talks about Macedonian poet Konstantin Miladinov and his ''Longing for the south (Taga za jug)'' (Written while he was staying in Russia. At that time he already felt ill, disappointed and obsessed by the desire to go back to his native country.), which basically summarizes this gentle and painful essay about twilight of the idols.

How everything was destroyed with civil war which started in 1991, and how instantly world changed. Nothing changed in the West of Europe, savages fought they thought, but within Debeljak's words I found many similarities with my childhood and my parents. Especially with literature and music, him mentioning Meša Selimović, Ivo Andrić, France Prešeren, Branimir Johnny Štulić and Azra, Czeslaw Milosz, Arsen Dedić, and their huge influences on my home library...

And not just on my family history, of every family in the ex Yugoslavia.

But, the tone of this essay is so gentle. Especially because this essay has been written in 1993, when the war was raging like a monstrous hateful beast. And Mr. Debeljak is a gentleman, he is a world class intellectual and his words are so soothing, although at that time he was a dissident.

You rarely find texts about this cultural and civil clash with positive connotations, it's always the same hate, but Aleš filled his words with melancholy, sorrow, longing and happiness for all the wright things, instead of writing about all the wrong things that happened along the way.

Truly words of an intellectual and philosopher worth listening and reading.
