The exuberant childlike drawings are overkill, too busy, too messy to be comprehensible,in my opinion, and wouldn't encourage a child to spend time with them.They're also not a great match for the text, which is a more soothing story about the comfort and joy of spending time with grandparents.I *think* I would have liked the text more without pictures, or with quieter, less distracting ones.I *think* I would have liked the style of the pictures a *bit* more if they'd illustrated a livelier, funnier story.

I just don't understand this tendency to load picture-books with artsy pictures.Stuff like this, and like many other books I've read this year, doesn't *illustrate* the text.It doesn't, imo, bring the words to life and give the child something that helps her understand the world the author is sharing.Stuff like this looks to me more like the kind of modern art that's in galleries but doesn't get sold.Not bad, per se, just not appealing or apt for children's books.
