I liked the small details given in this book that you do not hear about in the movies. For instance, Sao Feng’s map, which leads to the world’s end, depicts the symbols on it and what they mean. This book gives great descriptions of each individual character as well as their crews, their ships, and secret places pirates sail to like Isla de Muerta and Shipwreck Island.I was curious about the Black Pearl as well as the Flying Dutchman and its captain—Davy Jones.Davy Jones is one of my favorites; he is such a fantastic looking character.Pictures of his crew were fascinating too—most of which are half man and half sea beast. One creature in particular pointed out human bone which was fused to dead coral forming a tough exterior skeleton. He also had “stinging tentacles sprouting from his anemone eyes.”The illustration showing what the Black Pearl looks like below deck was interesting. It explained where they store food, where they sleep, what type of sails they use, how the captain’s quarters transforms into a gundeck and so forth.

The character profiles explained why they wear certain articles of clothing or prefer specific weapons.Captain Jack Sparrow carries a saber that is longer than most cutlass swords giving him more distance between him and his many enemies. He wears beads and trinkets in his hair that he has gathered from all around the world.“Each one reminds him of a different adventure.”Captain Barbossa wears a ring “plundered from a Ventian ship…[it] shows a lion’s head—the symbol of a leader.”It was mentioned how the funny dim-witted duo of Pintel and Ragetti came aboard the Black Pearl.“They were pressed into service by the English Navy, but jumped ship after a year of beatings, bad food, and boredom.”
