I am reviewing the English text of this bilingual book.
When I first picked up this book, I was captivated by Stacye Leanza's illustration on cover. Then, I read the opening line "It was the year of the Hawk and the Month of the Ninth Moon when Herman set out..." and I was sucked in. Author Joe Cole presents this book as a "picture book for all ages" and as a parable. I felt that Mr. Cole struggled in a few places as he worked to craft very real images of his very real trip to Greece into a brief parable. But overall it was a very good story and it could work well to begin a discussion of the process of struggling with realities as we work toward pursuing our dreams with kids, tweens or teens. While the book ends with Herman deciding that the volcano is the place for him to be, but as he weighs the pros and cons of the path that he has chosen in life, his story invites us to evaluate our choices and that judgements that we make about the paths chosen by others.
I LOVE that this book was published with English and Spanish side by side.
I received a free copy of this book for review.
