A Travelling Woman. (John Wain) pdf, epub, doc

Adulterous middle classes at play - just as we like them. But plot, characters and relationships all extremely artificial, none believable, and the setting is devoid of atmosphere and detail. Sort of Iris Murdoch very lite, with the philosophic bits watered down. At the beginning of the book the author takes several pages to describe a woman without making her in the least vivid or interesting. I can't help comparing this to Hubbard, who posits a chacracter's obsession with a woman without a descriptive word, to vastly superior effect. The best thing about the book is the epigraph:

I'm not good-looking,
And I don't dress fine,
But I'm a travelling woman
With a travelling mind.

The rest goes downhill. I can understand now why Amis and Larkin so despised Wain.
