Poverty's Child (Caroline Adams) pdf, epub, doc

It's the nineties, a boom-decade in terms of foreign intervention in East Africa, as the caravan of well-meaning but sometimes misguided non-government charitable organisations rolls through the region. Among them is Corrie Campbell, parasol-twirling, high-handed and ambivalent about her role as rescuing development worker, a mood only intensified on discovering an abandoned baby in the aftermath of a terrorist attack.

Bashir, wayward poet and qat-chewing refugee, is running as fast from the desert as she is drawn further into it and challenges her NGO’s mission to support the nomadic settlements. Their attraction, detonated by war and at risk of producing more heat than light, leads them both to question where they belong.

Paths cross and re-cross among a widening cast of characters with unexpected outcomes. A gang of street kids living in the city take a view all their own. And when the right thing to do becomes the wrong thing to do, Corrie must face ghosts from her past such as her nemesis, Macharia, a corrupt official, and the sudden arrival of an unwelcome guest.
