They worked the poor boy to the bone, and Planescape never really recovered after the loss of Diterlizzi. Perhaps the setting was already on its way down, what with the system changeover, economic slump, and sudden superabundance of bad campaign settings (Jakarta, anyone?). It is unfortunate that the most unusual, charming, and well-written D&D setting never became more popular, but the same could be said of Torment, the cult classic videogame based on the setting.

I never found the Inner planes to be as interesting as the Outer, so this long rehashing of elemental creatures was bound to fall somewhat flatter, independent of the artistic loss. While the Outer planes (and subsequent creatures) were based upon philosophy and politics, the Inner were more physical in their conflicts, and so most of this book boils down to taking a monster and adding an elemental power to it.

That's no way to honor the complex backgrounds and adventure hooks that made the first two compendia so fun to read. Even Something Awful did a send-up of this one.
