I compiled, edited and contributed to A Blended Bouquet. The anthology contains a diverse selection of work by some of the most talented writers I've come across.Collectively, the group is known as Writers Inc.I've been its chair (chairperson, that is, not - as one of my friends suggested - the thing they sit on at meetings) for three years.

A Blended Bouquet showcases some of the finest new writing to emerge from the rainy west coast of Scotland. Poetry, short fiction and non-fiction are all present. Robert Hume's poems are beautifully written in Scots.James Pettigrew writes fearless modern-day beat poetry.Maureen Brown's Last Chance Saloon is a poignant work of creative non-fiction which tells of George Orwell's time in Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride, Scotland, where he wrote 1984 while undergoing long-term treatment for TB; Maureen rigorously researched the facts, then filled in the gaps from her imagination.(East Kilbride is also the home of Writers Inc.)Helen Markwick's non-fiction and poems provide humorous social commentary.Maureen Smith's short funny fiction is based in that most venerated of Scottish locations: the pub.My short story Revelation Was Wrong veers into Douglas Adams territory, unveiling an unlikely prophet and an equally improbable alien abductee.Ina Fotheringham is a literary Earth Mother, her nature-inspired writing sensuous and evocative. The contributions of Kirsty Campbell, Kevin G.P. Campbell, Kerr Thomson, Cathy Carnie, Lizbeth Rooney and Jane Ryan defy description but have one thing in common: originality.

Appropriately, A Blended Bouquet was first published in Homecoming year, 250 years after the birth of Robert Burns.Upon leafing through the pages of the book, it is clear that the spirit of the Scottish bard is alive and breathing inspiration into his compatriots. Indeed, two of the poems are titled Homecoming, although neither deals with Burns's legacy: one tells of taking a father's ashes home to the Isle of Lewis; the other is both an homage to Scotland's wild beauty and a plea to preserve it.

The anthology has thirteen contributors, each with a distinct writing style.Jane Ryan's beautiful cover artwork is uniquely Scottish.Like a bottle of fine malt whisky, this anthology is best savoured over time, not guzzled down in one go. Also like that beverage, it is best enjoyed when you're relaxing in your favourite chair, free from distractions. It was a joy to put together.I hope you like it.
